(Synopsis) Two hearts in the darkness…

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

Hearts in Darkness was the very first book I ever read by Laura Kaye. The fact that I've read six or seven additional books by her in the 20 months since then should tell you how much I enjoyed it. I fell in love so hard with both Caden and Makenna. It's crazy to think that their first story only took place over the course of about 12 hours.

Now - FINALLY - Laura Kaye has given us more time with Caden and Makenna.

We learned a lot about Caden and his tragic past in Hearts in Darkness. We saw how Makenna helped him battle back the darkness and overcome so many of his fears. But, as we see in Love in the Light, those fears may have been beaten back, but they aren't gone.

The impending Thanksgiving holiday with Makenna's family - a family that only reminds Caden of what he lost - has brought back the fears and the nightmares and the thoughts that maybe he isn't good enough for the woman he loves. Combine those feelings of inadequacy with the appearance of Makenna's ex and her hostile brother, and it's a recipe for disaster.

Love in the Light broke my heart. CADEN broke my heart. It killed me to see him so immersed in the past so that he couldn't see the future when it was right in front of him. I could feel Makenna's frustration. She was doing everything right. She loves Caden so much and showed it in all the ways possible, but he was just too bogged down in all the ways he didn't measure up.

Her blue eyes were heaven in a stare, and saw right through all his masks. But instead of finding him unworthy - the way he felt - all that shined from those baby blues was addiction and unconditional acceptance. It slayed him. It really fucking did. Because she looked at him and never seemed to see all the defects he felt down deep.

Love in the Light is longer than Hearts in Darkness, which meant there was more of everything. Definitely more time - Love in the Light takes place over weeks instead of hours. There was also more drama. LOTS more drama. Lots more times that you will want to rip your hair out and yell at the characters when they do stupid things.

There was also more heat. And that's NEVER a bad thing. Especially when we're talking about tall, sexy, tatted Caden.

Laura Kaye does MORE very well. Love in the Light was everything I wanted after I finished Hearts in Darkness. It continued Caden and Makenna's story in the most real way possible. It showed that the road to a true happily ever after is not easy. It's hard and painful and sometimes it causes us to make the difficult choices in order to come out on the other side and be happy with the person you love.
